Isaac, a farmer based in Koforidua, shared his journey into animal farming on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle GH show with DJ Nyaami.
After completing school in 2017, he struggled to find a job, so he helped his mother run her store. He also ventured into selling phones, laptops, and other gadgets, but as business slowed down, he sought alternative opportunities. One day, he noticed people uprooting plants near his house and approached a man to ask about the leaves they were collecting. The man explained that they were used to feed rabbits and introduced him to rabbit farming. Intrigued, Isaac visited his farm, asked questions, and developed an interest in the business.
Determined to start his own farm, he turned to YouTube to learn more about rabbit rearing. He began with one female rabbit, later adding another female and a male for breeding. His rabbits reproduced quickly, with some giving birth to up to 10 offspring per month. As his farm grew, he attracted customers, with some buying for pets and others for consumption.
Initially, Isaac planned to rear and prepare rabbit meat for sale at his mother’s shop, but he later diversified into goat and sheep farming. He started with one female goat, a male goat, and a male sheep, but unfortunately, his male goat was stolen. Despite challenges, including sickness among his animals, he has expanded his livestock to 10 animals.
Now, he aspires to venture into catfish farming but lacks the necessary capital. Over time, his family, who initially disapproved of his farming venture, has come to appreciate its potential. He believes that animal farming is a lucrative business but requires dedication and sacrifice.
Isaac recalls a time when he encountered a snake while cutting leaves for his animals but was fortunate to escape unharmed. His message to young people is to remain patient, recognize opportunities in Ghana, and surround themselves with a supportive network. He advises them to follow productive content on social media rather than distractions.
Although some university graduates hesitate to enter animal farming due to societal perceptions, Isaac encourages them to embrace the trade. He started his business with just GHC 800, investing in roofing sheets for animal shelters and feeders. Now, many restaurants and individuals have approached him for partnerships, with some requesting 100 rabbits per month. However, scaling production requires additional resources, such as high-quality feed for faster growth.
Isaac’s journey highlights the potential in agriculture and the importance of persistence in building a successful business.
