Interview with Nii Awulley Addico on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide
In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide, Nii Awulley Addico Kanton shared insights about his journey in the United States, highlighting the realities of life abroad and urging people to change their perceptions about opportunities overseas.
Early Experiences Abroad
Addico recalled being trolled in the comment section of a previous interview, where someone sarcastically claimed he would eventually “realize the reality of living abroad” after a year or two.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Addico shared,
“When people travel abroad, they often have certain perceptions. For me, I’ve been here for two years and have worked hard to achieve my goals.”
Initially, he worked at a Mazda factory for two months before moving on to other warehouse jobs.
Eventually, he pursued his master’s degree at the University of Alabama and transitioned to working remotely for a car company.
Addico stressed the importance of acquiring skills, saying,
“If you don’t have sense, you’ll end up doing warehouse jobs until you die.”
The Importance of Skills
Addico emphasized that success abroad isn’t guaranteed without the right skills.
“When you come to the U.S., you either come skilled or unskilled,” he said. “I’ve seen people live here for 10 years without making it. If you don’t upgrade yourself, you’ll remain stagnant.”
He encouraged people in Ghana and abroad to learn high-paying skills like data analysis, SEO, coding, and online marketing.
He shared that he landed his first high-paying remote job as an SEO specialist through Indeed, leveraging skills he taught himself using tools like ChatGPT.
“I never studied marketing or data analysis in school. I learned these skills online, and they’ve changed my life.”
Changing the Narrative
Addico wants to shift the narrative that life abroad is always about struggle.
“Opportunities are limited in Ghana, but when you come to the U.S. with the right mindset and preparation, the possibilities are endless,” he said.
He has since registered his own company in Alabama, offering services like SEO, web designing, and online marketing.
He also highlighted the contrast between skilled and unskilled jobs, noting that skilled professionals earn significantly more.
“I know people earning $150,000 a year because they invested in learning valuable skills. Skilled jobs pay higher, even more than some doctors in the U.S.”
Advice for the Youth
Addico advised young people to prioritize learning over distractions.
“Put down your phone, delete social media apps, and focus on acquiring high-paying skills,” he urged. “People spend over 100 hours scrolling on social media when they could be learning something valuable.”
He concluded by saying,
“Adequate preparation is better than the destination. Opportunities exist, but you must plan ahead and put in the work. Don’t let negativity hold you back. Learn, adapt, and grow.”
