Germany-based Ghanaian Baba Anintambono recounted how he rescued a Nigerian lady in Libya who later became his wife and how she gave him the confidence to cross the sea to Europe.

In an SVTV AFRICA interview with DJ Nyaami, Baba revealed that he first travelled to Libya in 1999 and stayed until 2011 when he crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Italy. Baba had no intention of crossing the sea until he met his wife.

“I didn’t know I had to cross the Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe. I changed my mind and planned to work in Libya for six months and return to Ghana. But I got a job with the late Muammar Gaddafi’s brother, and he was very good to me, so I stayed there for years.

I eventually met my wife in 2009 at a shop, but she was a victim of trafficking. I met her at a food joint, and told me her story. I took her from the camp because I worked directly with Gaddafi’s brother. So I had some authority in the area,” he recounted.

During the Libyan civil war in 2011, Baba’s wife was heavily pregnant, and he wanted to return to Ghana, but all borders were closed. The Mediterranean Sea became the only means of leaving Libya.

“I wanted to leave the war broke out, but my boss convinced me to stay and that Gaddafi would win. So when I heard that Gaddafi himself had fled, I also had to find a way. Two months after my wife gave birth, we tried but returned because of the heavy waves.

I asked my wife whether we should try crossing again, and she said, ‘Yes, those who crossed do not have two heads. We will go.’”

They succeeded on the second try and eventually moved from Italy to Germany. Baba shared more on life in Germany and how some Ghanaians advised him to divorce his Nigerian wife.
