A week ago, a video of a Ghanaian on a boat travelling to Europe by sea surfaced online. The video shows a young man reassuring a lady ‘Vivian’ that everything will be fine as he has been rescued.
James Issifu is currently in Italy. He spoke to DJ Nyaami on SVTV AFRICA and revealed who Vivian is and why he had to document that moment.
According to the young man, he travelled to Tunisia hoping to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. James became stranded in Tunisia and eventually met Vivian, who helped him immensely.
“We had heard that Tunisia immigration was deporting illegal migrants. So I was scared. That was when Vivian came in. She called for me in French, but I spoke Twi. Thankfully, she was Ghanaian too and took me to her house.
About three weeks later, Vivian called me to her house again and told me she wanted to ‘push’ me to Europe. She got a taxi and paid for me to come to Europe. She’s the reason I am here,” he narrated.
Speaking on the journey to Italy, James mentioned that he spent three days on the road to the location and six days on the sea.
“The weather was quite bad, so it took six days to meet a rescue ship. When I finally saw the ship, I took someone’s phone to make that video because I had no hope of getting to Italy. That’s why I kept mentioning her name. I pray things get better for me,” he added.
