Effe Lois, a resilient Ghanaian entrepreneur based in Kwashieman, Accra, has built a thriving cleaning company from scratch. From post-construction cleaning, deep cleaning, sofa and car cleaning, to fumigation and Airbnb services, her business—Effe Lois Services—has grown into a trusted name in the cleaning industry.
In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Business Link, Effe shared how she started her journey four years ago with no capital but a burning passion for excellence.
“I learned how to save from my late mother,” Effe recalled. “I used to invest in treasury bills with my company payoff, hoping to earn some interest. Unfortunately, the bank collapsed and I lost all the money—it was all my sweat.”
That moment, though devastating, pushed her to restart her life
. “I had to begin from scratch. I was working for a friend in Airbnb management and noticed constant complaints about cleaners. I loved cleaning, so I took the initiative to step in and help.”
What began with a mop and a few borrowed tools soon grew into something bigger. She brought on one experienced staff and began doing small cleaning jobs.
“Sometimes we went to sites without machines, but we never gave up. Today, we have 20 workers and our own equipment.”
She noted that consistency and team spirit kept them going even when transportation was difficult.
“We didn’t even have a car at the beginning—sometimes we walked long distances to job sites. But my workers were passionate. That gave me the strength to press on.”
Today, Effe Lois Services has worked with top clients including Asomdwee Park, the Ghana Football Association, Regimanuel, the British High Commission, and more. They now operate across various towns in Ghana, handling up to three jobs in a day and using their two company vehicles—a Vitz and an Audi Caravan—for operations.
She emphasized that cleaning isn’t an easy job.
“You must be smart and have passion. If new workers don’t show it, I let them go—I don’t want anyone killing the spirit of the hardworking team.”
To young Ghanaians, Effe offers encouragement:
“There are plenty of jobs in Ghana. I started with nothing but determination. People laughed at us, but now they admire the work we’ve done.”
