Fred Ampadu: A Ghanaian Entrepreneur Bridging Science and Business in Ghana and Canada
Fred Ampadu, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and chemist based in Canada, has successfully transitioned from working abroad to establishing a thriving business in Ghana. With a background in research, development, and chemistry, he has been able to create innovative solutions by combining various chemicals to produce valuable products for both local and international markets.
Mr Ampadu initially lived and worked in Canada but decided to return to Ghana to contribute his expertise to the country’s industrial sector. He currently resides in Ashaley Botwe and operates a business that focuses on research and development. His work has earned him international recognition, and upon receiving advice from industry peers, he made the decision to set up a company in Ghana. With the support of his wife and friends, he established a facility dedicated to developing and commercializing chemical products.
Ampadu’s company specializes in refining waste materials into useful products. Some of his key innovations include:
- Engine Oil and Lubricants: Refining waste oil into medium vacuum oil, which can be further processed into engine oil.
- Fiber-Reinforced Plastics: Using plastic waste to manufacture transparent roofing sheets.
- Automobile and Industrial Coatings: Developing flame-resistant foam materials for vehicle interiors to minimize fire hazards in case of accidents.
- Spray Paint and Coatings: Producing auto-clear car lacquer, wood spray, and other protective coatings that are competitive on the global market.
Ampadu dedicated ten years to developing a unique product that is now widely used worldwide. His expertise in qualitative transmission fluids and grease has also helped improve automotive maintenance solutions.
Returning to Ghana was not without challenges. Ampadu realized that many industries still rely heavily on imported raw materials, which fluctuate in price due to currency exchange rates. However, through persistence and research, he has been able to collaborate with some of Ghana’s largest companies to provide locally developed chemical solutions.
He emphasizes the importance of hands-on supervision for business success in Ghana. Initially, he worked with only two employees but gradually expanded his workforce as the company grew. Despite facing setbacks, including factory fires and theft incidents—one of which involved a former employee stealing goods worth 500,000 GHC—Ampadu remained committed to his business vision.
Before establishing his business, Ampadu worked for major companies in Canada, where he developed valuable expertise. He was employed by one of the world’s largest coatings manufacturers, where his contributions earned him the “Chemist of the Year” award. Within six months, his innovations helped the company generate $600,000, and later, they reached $2 million in revenue.
Despite his success in Canada, Ampadu always aspired to start his own business. He frequently traveled between Canada and Ghana to bring in raw materials and oversee his business operations. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to fully focus on his company in Ghana.
Ampadu encourages young people to be strategic when venturing into business. He advises against waiting until old age to return to Ghana, as making mistakes early allows for learning and growth. He also highlights the importance of listening to locals and being adaptable in the business environment.
Ampadu’s company, Posa Industries, continues to expand, offering innovative chemical solutions to both local and international markets. His dedication to industrial growth in Ghana demonstrates the potential for Africans in the diaspora to return home and make a significant impact.
