Ghanaian Doctor , Designer & TikToker Kwasi, a returning guest on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with DJ Nyaami, shared valuable insights about his journey from Ukraine to Canada and the challenges immigrants face.
Kwasi strongly advises against using illegal or dubious means to move to Canada, as it often leads to regret. Many people rely on hearsay and misinformation when trying to travel abroad, but he urges potential migrants to do proper research before making any decisions.
He emphasizes that simply being a medical graduate does not guarantee immediate employment as a doctor in Canada. There is a strict licensing process, and it costs around $20,000 CAD to qualify for a medical license. Without meeting these requirements, a person may have to start with low-paying jobs to survive.
Kwasi shared that when he first arrived in Canada, he struggled for three months before securing a job. His wife, a Ukrainian who doesn’t speaks English was able to get employment faster because of her connections and recommendations.
Without a strong recommendation, job seekers often face rejection. Even after applying multiple times and sending emails, most companies do not respond. Employers prefer hiring local Canadian candidates over newcomers, making it even harder for immigrants to break into professional fields.
Kwasi warns that no matter your profession in Ghana, you will likely have to start from scratch in Canada. For instance:
- A nurse from Ghana will not immediately start working as a nurse in Canada.
- Many immigrants initially work as cleaners or in low-wage jobs before transitioning to their desired professions.
- The cost of living in Canada is high, with taxes, rent, and other bills adding financial pressure.
Kwasi shared his personal experience with an agent who overcharged him $4,000 and sent him to Ukraine. He warns that many travel agents mislead people, convincing them to travel illegally or with fake promises just to take their money.
Traveling to a new country without proper planning can be mentally and financially exhausting. Kwasi recalled how, when he first moved to Ukraine, he met many Ghanaians struggling due to poor planning and lack of opportunities.
He advises anyone considering relocation to first visit the country on a tourist visa to assess the environment before making a permanent move.
Final Advice: Be Vigilant and Do Your Research
Kwasi’s message to aspiring migrants is clear:
- Do not let agents deceive you—they will take your money and mislead you.
- Use AI and online resources to research thoroughly.
- Avoid peer pressure—traveling abroad is not for everyone.
- If you want to move to Canada, secure a work permit first, not a tourist visa.
Despite the struggles, Kwasi remains grateful for the life he has built in Canada. He urges everyone to stay informed, be patient, and make well-researched decisions before traveling abroad.
