Abena Sally, a well-known Ghanaian socialite, has voiced her concerns about scammers using her pictures to defraud unsuspecting victims. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, she revealed that fraudsters have been impersonating her on dating sites and social media platforms to extort money from people.
According to Abena, these scammers create fake accounts with her pictures, deceive victims into believing they are in a relationship with her, and then ask for money.
“They use my old pictures and claim to be me. Some even create bogus fan pages and demand money before giving out their contact details. Victims have sent large sums of money, thinking they are helping me,” she explained.
Abena recounted several instances where people had fallen victim to these scams.
“One man in the U.S. was scammed after a fraudster used my pictures to convince her it was my birthday. He sent $200 as a gift. Another victim was tricked into believing I didn’t have a phone and sent 2,000 GHC to buy one,” she said.
The situation has affected her personal life, as people confront her in public, accusing her of fraud.
“I’ve stopped posting frequently on social media because of this. Some victims even claim to have paid my supposed dowry, only to later realize they had been scammed. When they try to video call the scammers, they always have excuses, like a broken camera,” she added.
Abena assured the public that she has not been involved in any fraudulent activities and has taken security measures to protect her accounts.
“They have tried to hack my number, but my security is tight. Some of my colleagues have directed victims to me, and I have tried to explain the situation,” she said.
She has reported the matter to the police but believes the scammers won’t stop anytime soon.
“I was advised to create awareness, so I want people to be cautious when chatting with strangers online. I am not an apprentice; I am a university graduate. I studied Political and Social Science and have worked with institutions like Cocobod and ECG on contract,” she stated.
Despite these challenges, Abena is focused on making an honest living.
“I have a business in skincare products and clothing, but I took a break. Living in Accra is not easy, and people seeing your pictures being used for scams abroad is frustrating. I am the only girl among my brothers—one of whom is now a professor in engineering. My family has been very supportive, especially with my rent and taking care of my niece,” she shared.
She also clarified that scammers use different names, but her real account name is Sarah Mensah.
“My official Facebook page is Abena Sally, and I have verified social media accounts. If you come across any other account using my pictures, please report it,” she urged.
Abena Sally’s message is clear—she is not behind these scams, and the public should remain vigilant to avoid falling victim.
