LKwaku Attah, a Ghanaian national, is currently in Palau after falling victim to an online agent who promised him a pathway to Europe and the United States. According to Attah, he connected with the agent on Facebook, who claimed that obtaining digital residency in Palau would grant him easier access to Europe and allow him to apply for a U.S. visa.
After communicating with the agent for several months, Attah was assured that once he arrived in Palau, he would be provided with employment opportunities and further assistance in traveling to Australia if needed. The agent, allegedly based in the Netherlands, had a contact in Palau who facilitated the digital residency process.
Attah paid the agent 12,000 GHC for his services and spent an additional 26,000 GHC on airfare, totaling 38,000 GHC for the entire journey. The agent initially promised to purchase his ticket but disappeared with the money, forcing Attah to buy the ticket himself. Despite obtaining a one-year digital residency card, he arrived in Palau only to realize that no job arrangements had been made for him.
Currently, he is struggling to secure employment while staying in a shared hostel, paying $44 per night. He hopes to find work soon to sustain himself and possibly relocate. Through this experience, he warns others to be cautious when dealing with unverified agents online.
