Ghanaian Student Saddick Shares His Journey in Russia
Saddick, a Ghanaian student based in Tyumen, Russia, originally came to the country for his studies. With only a few months left to graduate, he shared his experiences in an interview with DJ Nyaami on the Daily Hustle Worldwide show.
According to Saddick, Russia wasn’t his first choice. He initially wanted to study in China and even secured admission. However, a friend studying medicine convinced him to consider Russia. At the time, he was a Level 200 student at Garden City University studying nursing but hadn’t been serious about his academics. Within a month and a half of applying, he secured a visa. Though he was hesitant, his parents insisted, and he eventually left Ghana.
Upon arrival, he spent his first year learning Russian. Through research, he realized that Russian education was more affordable than in Europe or the U.S. Medical students, for example, paid around $3,500–$5,000 per year. This convinced him to stay.
Initially, he was studying nursing at Garden City University, but after moving to Russia, he enrolled at Volgograd University. Four months later, he met someone on VK (a Russian social media platform) who helped him transfer to Tyumen. His school changed, and he had to restart his language program for two years. Saddick initially wanted to study engineering but found programming in Russian too difficult. He took a one-year academic leave and later switched to tourism and technology.
Looking back, he regrets taking the academic leave, as it delayed his graduation. While his former classmates at Garden City graduated in 2021, he was still in Level 100 that year. He advises students to avoid such mistakes.
Saddick supports himself financially in Russia, working part-time in delivery and taxi services. He left the university hostel four years ago and now lives in an apartment. He also helps other students come to Russia for school but warns that those who don’t
