Kamashii’s Journey: From Immigration to Making a Life in America
Kamashii, a popular TikToker was a regular guest on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami.
He shares his real-life experiences of living in the U.S., his struggles, and his views on immigration and work opportunities.
“I’m a citizen, so I’m not scared of ICE. My Abrewa (elderly) wife married me, which gave me legal status. She can’t have children, and I also don’t have any kids, which scares me sometimes. But she has a good heart. If I ever break up with her, I will cry. Sometimes, I go a whole year without intimacy, and when she asks why, I tell her to ask for it, so I can give her.”
According to Kamashii, Mexican immigrants face the highest risk of deportation.
“They are arresting more Mexicans because many of them get involved in the drug trade. The police presence here is high, and I’ve seen officers pull out guns in apartments. Some people might assume it’s an ICE raid.”
Kamashii currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, a stronghold for Trump supporters.
“Jobs are here in Ohio. I don’t care if I get fired for taking a three-month leave to visit Ghana—I will get another job.”
However, he acknowledges the tough job market.
“Many companies hire Hispanics, even those without proper documents. ICE is cracking down on such workers, which could open job opportunities for people like me.”
Some people work one job with overtime, while others juggle three or four jobs just to survive.
“In New York, people struggle to make a living. Some even buy cars and sleep in them without having a proper driver’s license.”
While many think moving to America guarantees success, Kamashii has a different perspective.
“When we are in Ghana, we overthink. But when I got here, I realized it’s not easy.”
He also highlights how life in Ghana can sometimes seem better.
“Some boys I used to help now drive Benz and pick me up from the airport when I visit. I can’t compete with them.”
Chris Waddle, a Ghanaian musician, left America to start a real estate business in Ghana, and according to Kamashii, “He is making more money than some people struggling in the U.S.”
Kamashii is planning for his future.
“We’ve finished building our house in Ghana, and we’ll soon sell our house in America and return home. This time, I’ll make sure to own a car in Ghana before relocating.”
Despite the challenges, Kamashii remains optimistic.
“I want to work for a few more years, make money, and invest in business back in Ghana. Living abroad pays, but it drains your energy. I will return home soon.”
“Ghanaians at home enjoy life more than some of us here. Even Shatta Wale only visited New York when he came to America. That should tell you something. America is not as easy as people think.”
