Francisca, a Ghanaian Based in the U.S., Promotes Women in Tech Through Slam Technology
Francisca, a Ghanaian entrepreneur in the U.S. and founder of Slam Technology, recently spoke with DJ Nyami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide about her initiative, Young Women in Tech.
As a woman in the IT industry, she is passionate about diversifying the field and has been working on this initiative since 2013.
Through this program, Francisca and her team select 20 young women from Kumasi, providing them with free accommodation and intensive IT training in collaboration with ISC2, a top cybersecurity firm in the U.S.
Participants receive three meals daily and undergo two weeks of training using ISC2’s curriculum.
At the end of the program, they are given free vouchers to sit for certification exams—vouchers that would otherwise cost $400. Additionally, the program offers job placement opportunities in cybersecurity.
She encourages all eligible women to apply, emphasizing that the training will begin on March 17, with check-in on March 16. Applications can be submitted via the website www.slama.org, under the Young Women in Tech scholarship section. The deadline for applications is February 19.
Francisca will personally travel to Ghana to oversee the program and has also secured mentors to guide the participants.
The program is open to women aged 20-36 years who hold a degree, as many employers in Ghana require one for job placements.
However, exceptions have been made in the past for outstanding candidates without degrees. Participants will need a laptop, but computers will also be provided for training.
For those who do not qualify, Slam Technology offers other training programs.
In 2023 alone, they trained 600 people, and since 2020, they have impacted 66,000 individuals through partnerships with MPs and various constituencies.
Francisca, inspired by her late father—a philanthropist who built schools in Ghana—has been offering free tech training in the country since 2011.
She has also built three libraries in Ghana, investing over $100,000 in educational development. She hopes to be remembered for her contributions to education and technology.
She stresses the importance of tech skills in today’s world, noting that even basic jobs require technology proficiency.
From cashier systems to airport procedures, technology is embedded in every industry, making it crucial for people to embrace digital skills, especially in cybersecurity and data science.
