From North Korea to the Netherlands to Canada: Jeff Shares His Experience on Daily Hustle Worldwide
Jeff is based in Toronto, Canada, he shared his journey through North Korea, the Netherlands, and finally to Canada, where he aimed to improve his quality of life.
Jeff is a returning guest on Daily Hustle Worldwide show with Dj Nyaami.
According to Jeff, life in Europe is more affordable than in Canada for those doing factory and cleaning jobs.
“In Europe—especially countries like Germany or the Netherlands—rent is cheaper, food is affordable, and you don’t need a car because the bus and train systems work efficiently. In Canada, you must own a car, pay for expensive insurance, and deal with high rent and the overall cost of living.”
Jeff added that while Europe offers better affordability, learning the local language is crucial for accessing quality jobs.
“If you can’t speak the language, it limits your options. That’s why I eventually moved to Canada, where English is widely spoken.”
Before moving to Canada, Jeff searched for a job and prepared himself by learning a skilled trade online.
“I trained to become a fire technician, which is always in demand. I studied independently, found a Canadian company, and joined as an apprentice. This job involves monitoring buildings to prevent fire outbreaks and ensuring safety. It’s a profession with great benefits and opportunities.”
He highlighted the importance of acquiring skills before migrating to Canada.
“Canada is a service-based country, not industrialized. If you don’t have a skill, you’ll struggle to find a good job. Nursing, electricians, bricklaying, and fire technicians are examples of fields with consistent demand.”
Jeff emphasized that Canada’s cost of living is high, and surviving without a well-paying job is challenging.
“To live comfortably, you need to earn at least $28 per hour. Apprenticeships are the pathway to many trades, but they often require thousands of hours of training—some jobs need 9,000 hours, which equals about four years of work.”
For newcomers struggling financially, Jeff recommended Ontario support programs, which offer $730 to help with initial expenses. He also encouraged people to obtain licenses for fields like security or law enforcement, which provide steady income and career growth.
Jeff advised people in Ghana not to rush into migration without proper preparation.
“Save money and learn a trade before making the move. The idea of ‘Abrokyire’ (abroad) being easy is outdated. You can succeed wherever you are if you plan well. Ghana is tough, but migrating without skills or a plan won’t make things better.”
Despite the challenges, Jeff has no plans to return to Ghana, as he believes the future is brighter in Canada.
“The sky is the limit here, but you must be prepared to work hard and have the right qualifications.”
