A Ghanaian policewoman has been reported dead in Panama on her way to the deadly road trip to Mexico in the hope of crossing the border to the US.
In an interview on SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami, a gentleman (name withheld) narrated that he met the policewoman and three other Ghanaians on the flight to South Africa, where their trip started. However, she lost her life while crossing a waterbody in Panama alongside two other Cameroonian women.
He said, “We travelled to Brazil together. She drowned while crossing the Panama River. It happened about three months ago and the agent has informed her family of her death.”
According to the immigrant, he began the journey about four months ago and is currently in Mexico. Many such immigrants to the US often mentioned Panama as the most dangerous and difficult to cross. However, the interviewee disclosed that some Mexicans currently kidnap immigrants to extort money from them.
“We were arrested by the men in police uniform and transferred into a white van. I can’t confirm if they were real policemen or the Mexican mafias were dressed as such. They took us to a hideout with over 400 other people, claiming they’d help us cross the border.
Once they see a foreigner in the border town, they know you are going to the US. I had to pay $4,500 before I was released. Two people were shot in my presence. Many have been there for months,” he narrated.
