UK-based Ghanaian Maame Betty shared that marriage is not a woman’s liberation and advised them against getting married to be dependent.
In an interview with SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami, Maame Betty expressed her views on marriage, highlighting that it should not be perceived as a means of liberation for women. She cautioned that if women view marriage solely as a path to freedom, they might regret their decision later on.
“Marriage is not the only option for a financially poor woman. Most of us think marriage can liberate us but it does not liberate anyone. You will be disappointed. Most of them regret it and the tiniest mistake causes a divorce.”
Furthermore, she advised that women should think carefully before entering into marriage, especially if their motivation is primarily the desire for someone to provide care and support for them. Rather than relying on a partner for financial security, she emphasised the importance of self-sufficiency and personal fulfilment.
“Don’t go into a marriage solely because you need a man to cater to you. Build yourself up as a woman because men want help mate. You can help yourself and even if you need assistance, prepare to receive that help,” Maame Betty noted.
