US-based Ghanaian Fred, a former police officer revealed that he quit the service to travel abroad after 11 years and now earns GHS22,000 as a forklift operator in America.
In a chat with DJ Nyaami on SVTV AFRICA, Fred mentioned that he realised the need to travel abroad after about a decade in the Police Service and began to find opportunities outside the countries. According to Fred, his salary was not enough and officers were promoted every five years.
“I had to quit everything because I realised the leaders are selfish. They are not interested in helping the people. We risked our lives as police officers but the leaders were corrupt. I realised it was not a place for me to work.”
Fred began his journey in South Africa where he stayed for a couple of years and returned to Ghana. He travelled to the US two years ago. He stated that despite his short time in the US, he can confidently say he has achieved more than in Ghana.
“I made quite a lot of money in my first year in the US because I worked long hours. I make more than enough now as a skilled worker. I won’t ever leave the US to stay in Ghana permanently,” he added.
