Brazil-based Ghanaian Darkito disclosed that he lived in Brazil for a while and decided to travel by road to the US but could not stay.
In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa, Darkito revealed that he was comfortable in Brazil with his residence permit. Still, he wanted to try the deadly cross-country journey to explore. He expressed that his initial intention did not involve crossing the Mexico-US border. However, the Ghanaians and Africans he encountered played a key role in convincing him to do so.
“Two of my best friends travelled by foot to the US and called me when they arrived. I decided to travel by road to create content. I started the journey alone until I got to Peru, where I met Ghanaians and other West Africans.
I became a leader to almost 150 people because I could speak Spanish. When we finally got to the US border, I wanted to return but the Ghanaians said they wouldn’t go without me. I planned to know how they did it.”
While in the US detention centre, Darkito helped many with their statements and release process but was reluctant to leave. He was finally released after a month and stayed for nine months before applying to be deported back to Brazil.
“I started working and earned $4500 monthly but didn’t want to stay. I called the officer to cancel my case. The US is a stressful country. I couldn’t find time to rest and like to tour, not stay in one place.”
Speaking on the benefits he enjoys in Brazil, Darkito mentioned free healthcare and education for immigrants.
