Kwasi, a Ghanaian currently based in Canada shared his experience living in Ukraine as a student at the height of the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Kwasi disclosed that he was not ready to return to Ghana despite the government’s intervention to transport Ghanaians back home. According to Kwasi, he heard of the economic hardship in Ghana and could not risk leaving Ukraine.
“My mom often complained about the economic crisis in Ghana. I knew my situation would change drastically and I didn’t want to have to start over. I was ready to die in Ukraine if I had to instead of going home. I didn’t want to risk it.
Besides that, I was dating a Ukrainian woman and my family put pressure on me to leave Ukraine during the war but I could not go without her. Also, her parents didn’t want to let her go,” he told DJ Nyaami.
Kwasi indicated that he travelled by road to Poland with his wife, where they stayed for a while. They returned to Ukraine and eventually moved to Denmark before settling in Canada.
“Most of the Schengen countries opened their borders to Ukrainians. So, we went to Denmark and the government supported Ukrainians with $6000. But we had to migrate to Canada because it was easier to get a permit there than in Denmark,” he added.
