A retired Ghanaian newsagent living in the UK for nearly 50 years recently got his right to remain as decided by the Home Office.
When he applied for a UK passport, Nelson Shardey was informed that he had no right to stay in the UK in 2019. Mr Shardey never left the UK; he regarded it as his home and saw no need to.
The UK Home Office and the government recognised his case as exceptional and granted him indefinite leave to stay. UK-based Ghanaian lawyer, Wisdom Akaho mentioned on SVTV Africa that his records made it easier for the Home Office to grant him a right to remain.
“I mentioned that his case is exceptional because he has a good record in the UK. In 2007, he stopped a robbery and was awarded by the police. Fortunately, the Home Office also considered his case exceptional and granted him an indefinite leave to remain.
However, it is not a British citizenship. He has to wait a year to apply for the citizenship and meet some requirements for it to be granted,” Lawyer Wisdom said.
Shardey’s family said a crowdfund of over £48,000 raised for his legal fight will be donated to charity.
