Kofi Ackon, a Ghanaian based in Spain shared a story of his first attempt at stowing away to Europe from the Takoradi Harbour in mid 90s.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mr Ackon mentioned that he joined a ship headed for Europe with his friend at the harbour and hid in the ship’s lower hull for a week without food.
“We couldn’t go out because it had been locked and we kept our food somewhere else. At Abidjan, some Burkinabes came to search the ship because they knew they could be stowaways since the ship was coming from Takoradi. We refused to get out when we were caught. So I planned to knock him out but I failed.
He called for backup and got us out. The French soldiers beat us to a pulp. I didn’t even know blood could come out of my eyes until that experience. They locked us up in San Pedro for a week and later transferred us to Abidjan cells for a month,” he recounted.
At the Abidjan Port cells, Kofi Ackon and 12 other Ghanaians were released and sent back to Ghana. Kofi mentioned that he arrived in Ghana after the death of his young son.
