Sweden-based Ghanaian, Tina revealed that she invited her brother to Sweden, but the Danish Embassy in Accra denied his visa application because the visa officer did not believe there were siblings.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Tina indicated that this was her second attempt at sponsoring his brother’s visit to Sweden. Tina had just given birth and needed a sibling around him as her Swedish husband had to work.
“I thought they denied him the first time because he lacked travel experience. Their reason for the refusal was that they did not believe he’d return to Ghana. We tried again as a group visa (brother and niece) and sent all the necessary documents.
My niece had lost her mother and they requested her death certificate and interviewed her father. They demanded a picture of me and my brother and proof that he knows my husband but they still denied them the visas.”
Tina mentioned that his Swedish husband made a complaint to the embassy but it proved futile. She added that they also applied to the Swedish Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria but the application was also denied.
“I was too sad because I needed family around. Someone who was close and understood my language but they refused and told us to take it to court if we like.”
Ghanaians living in Sweden are dissatisfied with the frequent rejection of visa applications from Ghana, urging the Ghanaian Foreign Ministry to take action.
