Kwesi, a former Marketing Manager at an Advertising Firm here in Ghana, disclosed that despite his lucrative job, he still felt the need to travel abroad, however, he became jobless in Canada.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Kwesi revealed he was comfortable in Ghana. He earned GHS10,000 monthly and worked with many prestigious brands and names in Ghana. However, he wanted more. According to Kwesi, he was the first in three generations to live abroad and needed to create a link for his family.
“My colleague came to Canada, and when I asked for the amount, I was surprised. Why would I still be in Ghana if that’s the amount it took to travel abroad? So, I never planned to travel abroad, and I didn’t come for money. The kind of life I lived back home is not what I’m living now, but it is an opportunity to create another aspect of hegemony for my family.
I came from a humble beginning. I can say that I’m the only one in three generations who had that money. I could not say I had an aunt or uncle abroad. My boss had family abroad, but those abroad were richer than him. So I sacrificed myself to be that link for my family.”
Kwesi moved to Canada a year ago on a student visa. He shared some difficulties he faced after he arrived in Toronto, Canada.
“The travel agent made it seem too easy. He told me I’d get my money back within a few months. So, I sold my cars and built a house in Ghana before I left. I regretted it because I didnt bring enough money. I was jobless for three months and almost evicted from where I lived. I would have broken down if I weren’t mentally strong.”
