A Ghanaian nurse, Christel Amoah, indicated that GHS10,000 as a health worker pay is reasonable for Ghanaians and would keep the nurses from travelling abroad.
Speaking on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Christel urged the health ministry and the government must provide good working conditions and increase monthly salaries.
“If a nurse makes GHS10,000 a month, it is not much because we put our lives on the line every day for patients. Some pregnant nurses risk their lives and baby’s lives for patients. The trauma is too much. If I make GHS10,000 a month, I won’t think of travelling abroad.
That is why many nurses are leaving the country. Some also may not be about the money only but also their comfort. They could have different reasons for leaving despite making that amount.”
Christel reiterated that like many other nurses, she has no plans of relocating abroad. However, she pleaded with the respective ministries and authorities to make their jobs easier by providing the needed equipment and remuneration.
