Joseph Cobbina, a former gold agent, expressed regret for wasting money while in Ghana instead of investing in other businesses.
In an interview on SVTV AFRICA DJ Nyaami, Joseph mentioned that after illegal mining activities were shut down, he had no other business to fall on and travelled to the Netherlands to work.
“The plan was not to stay abroad. I was depressed. I lost everything within a day. I made a lot of money from the gold business. I could buy two cars within a month and spend about GHS10,000 to GHS15,000 daily. I knew I would get the money quickly. I couldn’t keep money on me.
I had to find some means of spending it before the end of the month. I spent on helping people and gave my workers GHS1000 just for food. I wouldn’t have done that today. I did not make any investments whatsoever ever. The cars I bought were what I used to pay for travel processes when the business collapsed.”
Joseph had planned to return to Ghana, but his friends advised him to stay in the Netherlands. He rented an apartment and got a job as a kitchen porter. Joseph indicated that he earned about 1600 euros then.
He reiterated the regrets he had after his gold business collapsed and said,” I didn’t give my father the chance to come close to me but they got everything they needed. I didn’t want them to tell me what to do with my money. The money controlled me. I regret it.”
