A US-based Ghanaian Nana Yaw revealed that he quit his teaching job with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to travel abroad and had to save up in case he faced deportation.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Nana Yaw mentioned that he wanted to save up his pension bonus at least if arrested and deported to Ghana. He disclosed that
“GES took my name out of their system a month after I left Ghana for the UK. So I had to ensure that I saved enough, at least my pension pay in case I was deported. I saved up three times my pension pay in Ghana within the first year.
The teacher’s pension was about GHS50,000 then. I was earning £800 a week with my first job but worked there for three months because the Covid affected it. I had to work two jobs to get that amount.”
Nana Yaw eventually moved to the US to join his wife. He spoke about the system in the US and compared it to that of the UK. According to Nana Yaw, workers earn more in America than in the UK, adding that he has seen some improvements in his life since he moved.
