A young Ghanaian interpreter based in South Korea, Helena is a student and a part-time interpreter for Ghanaians living in South Korea.
Helena, in an interview on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, revealed that she speaks five languages (Fante, English, German, Chinese, Korean) and plans to learn more. She shared some of the benefits of learning the South Korean language aside from the job opportunity she’s got.
“You can easily read new laws for foreigners on the local news. Generally, it is much more comfortable for my everyday life. They see me as one of them because I speak Korean fluently.”
Helena joined her Ghanaian parents in South Korea at the age of 7. She began at a Korean elementary school studying the language and is currently standing at one of the top Korean universities.
“There are levels to the language. I’m on level two, so I’m called when the level one interpreter is unavailable. I’m currently studying Political Science and International Relations. My biggest goal is to join the UN. I want to help people, especially Ghanaians here.
