US-based Ghanaian lesbian Nessa has disclosed that she dated guys while in Ghana to fit in or seem normal, but she had feelings for girls and added that she found her freedom after moving to the United States.
In an interview on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Nessa mentioned that she joined her mother in the US after completing JHS in Ghana at age 15. Speaking on her experience schooling in Ghana, Nessa said she had feelings for her female friend in boarding school, but she had to cover it because it was unnatural in Ghana.
However, after moving to the US, she was taught in high school that having feelings for the same gender was normal. According to Nessa, this made her free to explore her sexuality more.
“I’m a lesbian. I had those feelings while I was in Ghana, but no one spoke about it. I just knew that I liked my best friend (female) more than usual. The experience I had was just between us, and it felt weird, but I got enlightened after I got here.
In Ghana, we are taught that men date women. So, I dated guys to seem normal. I was not very sexual with the men I dated, and I never initiated sex or enjoyed it. It was just for the guy’s pleasure, but I’m more comfortable, and I’m happier during sex with women,” she said.
Nessa reiterated the freedom America gave her and indicated that she would have been judged if she were still in Ghana.
