Shirley Naah, a Ghanaian in Egypt, expressed her regrets for quitting her job to travel to Egypt for a ‘better job’ offer and added that Ghana is far better than Egypt.
In a chat on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Shirley mentioned that she earned ₵1500 as a security guard in Ghana before accepting to leave for Egypt. According to her, she earned less in Egypt than she did in Ghana. Aside from that, the agent took her salary for eight months to clear her debt.
“The agent told me I’d make $500 as a household in Egypt, and I was convinced to resign from my security job. He charged me $4000 after arriving in Egypt, and I worked eight months but never got my pay. It went straight to the agent. I’ve regretted it so much. If regret could kill, I would have died a long time ago.
I should have stayed and focused on my job. I don’t know what I’ll be doing when I return to Ghana now. Ghana is far better, but we don’t realise it until we leave the country. It is even better to make ₵500 in Ghana than work in Egypt,” she said.
Moreover, Shirley disclosed that some agents and Egyptian employers maltreat these young girls. According to her, some are physically abused, and others have died from the long hours of work and stress.
