Ghanaian agent based in Egypt, Sarah Nartey, confirmed claims made by Ghanaians in Egypt and added that it is their method to ensure they pay their debt before leaving the country.
In an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami, Sarah refuted claims that they sell the workers to others. She believes that most Ghanaians who complain about their jobs are lazy. Sarah revealed that she once endured difficulties in her job and settled her debt for her freedom.
“I’ve been here for six years now. Egypt has been a blessing to me. I endured the struggles to pay my debts to my agent when I arrived. We seize their passports because I’ve almost incurred a cost. I pay for their flight tickets, and you pay another agent in Ghana for the visa process.
The process and flight ticket will cost almost $2500. I charge you $4500 when you arrive. You can’t pay rent, food or anything. I’ll provide all you. That is why we take their passports because some flee back to Ghana without paying us.”
Moreover, Sarah Nartey said that seizing their passports is also a way of keeping them safe for them. Sarah reiterated that these victims must pay their debts before getting their passports. However, these victims claim they are subjected to long hours of work without pay because the agents take away their pay.
Some victims have disclosed that some agents threaten their clients while others physically abuse and starve them.
