Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Michael Asare revealed that he played football in Ghana with the hope of travelling abroad because he saw no future for him in Ghana.
Speaking on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Michael mentioned that he saw the plight of many retired Ghanaian footballers and vowed to play for a club in Europe. He mentioned that travelling abroad through football was his only shot at success.
“My parents were not rich. My dream was to play football in Europe. Whatever it took. That was my target. I watched the Bundesliga every weekend, and I dreamed of playing there.
I had no plans of playing in Ghana. I promised myself and was determined to travel abroad because I didn’t see a future in Ghana. I saw many old players and how they lived after retirement,” he said.
The UK-based Ghanaian’s first football club outside Ghana was in South Africa. From there, he travelled to Portugal and Germany before his early retirement due to a knee injury. He eventually moved to the UK to study a coaching course after 18 years in Germany.
“I remember advising some friends to stay here after retiring, but they refused. Today, some of them have died poor. You’ll survive even if you work four hours here.”
