Jeffrey Terkpetey, a Ghanaian living in the UK, disclosed that his mother asked him to pay for the flight and the process of filing through immigration for him to join her in Italy.
In a chat on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Jeffrey indicated that he was
eager and excited to join his mother in Italy, but their relationship grew cold after he confronted her on the charge.
“You’re charging your kids for what? It’s not the best. I know as a parent, your child’s successes are yours too. Our parents still have the African mentality. They will push you into factory jobs to bring them the money.
My mother charged me, and I used to pay, but she knew I wasn’t happy about it and voiced it out. They make it a business, and it ruins relationships. We sometimes met in a supermarket and passed by each other. I have only seen my mom three times in five years,” he said.
According to Jeffrey, such situations make it difficult for the children to integrate into the system properly or get an education for better-paying jobs. He advised parents to avoid asking their children to pay huge amounts of money after they arrive.
He said, “Many of us here don’t live happily. It’s different if you bring them through other means, but the legal process through immigration is not expensive. It ruins many relationships.”
