Nana Ama Afrakoma, an Australian-based Ghanaian revealed that she makes AUD45 (₵348) per hour as a truck driver stationed at a mining site.
Speaking on SVTV AFRICA, Nana Ama mentioned that skilled jobs are the most sought-after jobs in Australia, especially truck driving. Nana shared how she got into the job and how easy it is for non-natives to join.
“It is easy to join. You’ll start as a trainee and you get your certificate after you pass. I’m a full-time employee but I’m currently on maternity. So they pay me for 36 weeks until I resume. Just a few women work at my workplace. I know some who quit during the training process.
It’s not an easy job but it pays well. I can say 80% of Australians work away. We go for two weeks and stay at home for two weeks. Employees on contract make about 53 to 60AUD an hour but full-time employees make AUD45 an hour,” she said.
According to Nana Ama, the job opportunity is available to all who have the skill or want to learn. Afrakoma added that she is the only African woman at her job. However, many Australian women ply this trade.
