The Netherlands-based Ghanaian Mabel disclosed that she could not divorce her ex-husband despite the physical abuse, but she was scared of being alone.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mabel indicated that she saw the red flags in her ex-husband in the early years of her marriage, but she feared being alone because she did not have the best relationship with her mother and could not speak to anyone else.
“Life in the Netherlands is not as sociable as in Ghana, where someone could freely advise. People here don’t care as much. That makes you feel alone. I went into the relationship depressed. I was looking for someone, and my mind wasn’t clear.
I saw it (red flags), but I was scared of being alone because I had no one. So I had to stay in till I was strong enough to stand on my own. I took a lot of abuse, but I stayed in till I was emotionally strong enough to stand on my own,” she told DJ Nyaami on SVTV AFRICA.
Speaking on how it affected her, Mabel said, “It had some effects on me. I survived it, but I could have died. Even his friends didn’t like what I was going through. I wasn’t supposed to be in a relationship then, but I went in because of depression. So I spent the time meant to develop myself by giving birth and vice versa.”
Mabel advised young ladies to choose their partners wisely to avoid such situations and be attentive to the red flags that their partners might exhibit.
