Australia-based Ghanaian Robert Sowah revealed that he works two weeks a month as a miner, but he makes more than a doctor in Australia.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mr Sowah disclosed the importance of skilled work abroad and encouraged young Ghanaians to learn a skill instead of formal education.
According to Sowah, skilled workers in Australia make twice or more compared to degree holders. He cited himself as an example.
“No one respects welders in Ghana, but if you’re a farmer here in Australia, you make more money with free accommodation. I make more than a doctor here if that’s his only job. I don’t have a degree. I work two weeks a month. I work five months a year. But I would not be able to compare myself to a doctor in Ghana,” he said.
Moreover, Mr. Sowah told DJ Nyaami the importance of skilled jobs abroad and why the youth must learn a trade. He reprimanded Ghanaians abroad who settle for menial jobs instead of striving for better opportunities in their respective countries.
“The mechanics at mines in Australia make 80 to 90AUD per hour, and welders make about 80-100AUD per hour. But a Ghanaian will not learn welding because his girlfriend will leave him. Our culture has made us mentally sick. We don’t empower each other abroad. All we talk about is funerals and weddings.”
