Felix Nyarko, a Ghanaian based in the US, narrated how shocked he was after he received his first paycheck in America.
Mr Nyarko travelled to the US on the US Visa Lottery ticket five years ago. He shared how life-changing the program was for him in an interview on SVTV AFRICA.
Speaking with DJ Nyaami, Felix disclosed that his first job in the US paid GHS17,000 as his bi-weekly salary. According to Felix, he was excited after he converted it to Ghana Cedis and shocked at the difference.
“I was studying at the time and working part-time. Whatever I make here is about ten or eleven times more than what I would make in Ghana. I got GHS17,000 for two weeks. So, a month would be GHS34,000. I was shocked when I saw it. Even after rent and other bills, I still had about GHS24,000 left. It is life-changing.”
Moreover, Felix shared some details about living in the US. According to Felix, many Ghanaians in America, including himself, have no social life, and many live their lives on social media.
“Unlike Ghana, where you can hang out with friends, it’s the opposite here. Even when you’re free, your friend is at work. Today is my day off, but I’m stuck at home because my friend is at work. I don’t have a life here,” he added.
