Chile-based Ghanaian Eugene Larbi revealed that he decided to stay in Chile than return to Ghana after his football career ended.
In an interview on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Eugene indicated that a Nigerian football agent almost got him to sign a bad deal due to the language barrier. However, he followed his instincts and got a third party to read the contract.
After that fallout, he planned to travel by road to Argentina, but he was arrested and had to choose between Ghana and Chile. Eugene chose the latter based on several reasons. He’s been in Chile for nine years, and claims it is the best country.
“Chile gave us the chance to apply for their passports. So I decided to stay back and apply because it might take 30 years for me to get a permit in the US. So I took advantage of it,” he said.
Moreover, Eugene indicated that it would be easier to travel to over 100 countries when he has a Chile passport.
“The former Chile president helped the foreigners a lot. We could work even without a permit and apply for the permit while working as long as you pay taxes and have a clean record. I’ll get the passport soon, and I’m comfortable here.”
Eugene also spoke about the cost of living, availability of jobs and more in Chile.
