Known on social media as Dr Mega One, Joseph Obeng revealed that he was duped off over $8000 after visiting Ghana from South Africa to bury his mother.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Dr Mega indicated that he saw an advertisement about a travel agency securing Canadian visas for applicants. According to Mega, the agent charged $10,000, and he made an initial deposit of GHS5000.
“I went to their office in Kasoa. It was a beautiful office with portraits of the President and some Ministers, and even called some ministers his ‘boys.’ It was all a scam. After the initial payment, he called me to return to Accra from Kumasi to sign some documents.
He often called me to pay some fees and sign documents. I gave him over $8000 in total. The agent later told me the visa was ready, but I had to pay the balance first. I didn’t go for any interview or biometric registration, so I was in doubt,” he narrated.
With uncertainty, Mega called his Accra-based friend Evans to find out if that was possible. His friend told him it was possible “and took the agent’s contact. Three days later, my friend and two others paid for the connection.
I felt relieved and started searching for money to pay my balance. Two of my friends paid in full, and I went with them to collect their passports. I had not finished paying, so I couldn’t get mine yet. We went there to meet an empty office.”
Dr Mega One lost all his money, passport and could not return to South Africa. He had to work for GHS20 daily at Kumasi Magazine.
Moreover, his friend Evans and the others accused him of being part of the scheme. Mega was detained at Suame Police Station and eventually made bail. On December 4, 2022, Mega was acquitted and discharged.
