US-based Ghanaian Alhassan Sherrif has stated that he was among three Ghanaians forced to fight in the first Libyan civil war and described it as his worst experience ever.
In a chat on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Alhassan indicated that he travelled to Libya to work because his girlfriend had just given birth and needed to support them financially. However, he did not expect to be drafted to war.
“I left Ghana with GHS600 in my pocket. I spent two months on the road to Libya, and when we finally arrived, the war began. We were three Ghanaians, and one of us came to tell us about a job he had heard about. A company had warehouses on the outskirts of town and wanted security guards, so we left for the site.
When we arrived, there were many foreign nationals from Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, etc. Then the soldiers gave us uniforms and firearms to go and fight in the war. They just taught us to shoot, disassemble and reassemble the gun. It is the worst experience I’ve ever had,” he narrated.
Alhassan had no intention of settling in Libya or crossing to Europe. He only wished to stay for three years, make enough money and return to Ghana. After they returned to town, the soldiers gave them 1000 dinars (about GHS1000 at the time).
