Egypt-based Ghanaian Lucy Agyabeng narrated her experience with travel agents and how she was sold off to work agents in Northeastern Africa.
In an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide on SVTV AFRICA, Lucy revealed that her mother’s friend in Egypt offered to sponsor her trip to come and work in Egypt. However, she was arrested at the Egyptian airport and eventually deported.
Lucy tried the second time and arrived safely at her mother’s friend’s house in Egypt. She said, “I went straight to her house when I arrived. She took me to a man’s house, but she had sold me off to him. We were four girls. She gave us food and took us to different houses.”
“It was nothing like what she told my mom. I wasn’t coming to work here to pay her, but she sold me off. I asked her about it. She said it was the man who sponsored my trip, but I found out she sold me for double,” she narrated.
According to Lucy, the man who sponsored her trip was also an agent in the same business. Lucy had to pay off $5500 to get her passport back and be free from the agent. Miss Agyabeng was paid about $300 monthly. It took two and a half years to pay her debt.
“I’ve got my passport now and have rented my place. I’m a cleaner now. I got the job from the same agent. I work 12 hours, and we have four days off monthly. There are many Ghanaians, and others are still coming,” she told DJ Nyaami.
