Italy-based Ghanaian David Tei Mensah has revealed that he was arrested and detained five times in five years and led a prison escape the fifth time.
In a chat on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, David indicated that he lived and worked in Libya for years but was always at risk of being arrested and losing all savings.
According to David, foreigners were arrested without reason because they “want money. They’ll ask for a permit, but you can pay them off. Otherwise, you’ll stay in prison until someone bails you out.”
David mentioned that he fled back to Ghana empty-handed during the Libyan war but returned. He said, “I was aware that people were crossing the sea to Europe, but I was too scared and threw the thought away.”
“I started considering it after I returned to Libya the second time because I encountered a lot at the time. I was arrested yearly for five years. I was imprisoned for four months in December 2015. On the 31st night, we broke jail and escaped.
I smuggled a hammer into the jail after working outside. The prison wasn’t strong enough, so it took three days to break it. Some were arrested, but I escaped,” he narrated.
A year later, David booked his seat on the inflatable boat to embark on a fall journey to Europe.
