Veteran Ghanaian musician Sony Achiba has revealed that he left Ghana while promoting a single because of threats from his ex-girlfriend’s family.
In an interview on SVTV AFRICA with DJ Nyaami, Emmanuel J.B Dankwah, as he is privately known, indicated that his Indian girlfriend’s family disapproved of their relationship. Sony added that he was being watched and had to flee his home country.
“They were not happy with that kind of relationship. I felt threatened because they were watching me closely. So I left for the UK. It didn’t stop because we were still talking, and they followed me to some of my shows.
I don’t know them, but they knew me. That was dangerous. I had to let go until I heard she was married before I returned to Ghana,” he explained.
Sony Achiba indicated that his ex-girlfriend was not the only reason he left Ghana. He mentioned that while promoting his album, a radio presenter called his song ‘Trash’ live on the radio.
Despite confronting the head of the station, he lost opportunities because of his comments.
“It broke me down because he ruined the idea. He was a powerful radio presenter too. I struggled to make that album, and I lost an opportunity because of that,” he added.
