US-based Ghanaian Owusu Nyantakyi has shared his story in a US detention centre after crossing the Mexico border to the US.
Speaking on SVTV AFRICA, Owusu shared his journey from Brazil through Nicaragua and other countries to Europe. When Owusu finally crossed the Mexican border to the US, he surrendered to US immigration, where they sent him to a detention centre.
“They were about 426 prisoners excluding us, and I was humbled. Looking back at the life I had in Ghana, I was humbled. I wanted to commit suicide when I got to the cell because I was facing deportation. So I told one of the nurses about committing suicide, but I had to change my mind.”
Eventually, he was called for an asylum interview and transferred to a different detention centre. Owusu indicated that the living conditions there were difficult, and he decided to get a job in the detention centre to pass away time.
“I was paid 1$ per day as a kitchen helper there. After I passed the interview, they released me in the outskirts of the town and called a family member who booked a flight for me to New York,” he added.
Owusu shared more about his road journey on Daily Hustle Worldwide from Brazil to other Central American countries to America.
