Italy-based Ghanaian Emmanuel Essien has revealed that the hardship at home pushed him into making a risky decision to travel to Europe through Libyan waters.
In an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Emmanuel shared his trip from Ghana through Libya to Italy. He revealed that it took a month to get to Libya, where he stayed for another two months before taking the inflatable boat to Europe.
According to Emmanuel, he was scared when he heard stories about people dying before reaching their destination. However, he did not back out because “going forward with a possibility of death was better than going back.”
“We were about 137 people in the boat. Our boat stopped in the middle of the sea, and we had to fetch the water out of the boat. We spent 33 hours on the sea with no food or water. It was scary, seeing death right before your eyes,” he said.
After a day and seven hours on the Mediterranean Sea, they were rescued by Italian rescuers.
“There was a child on the boat who was weak because we had no food or water. So we saw a Spain plane and raised the child onto them. They saw us but left. Thirty minutes later, three ships came and rescued us,” Emmanuel added.
