Germany-based Ghanaian Antoinette Owusu has revealed that her ex-husband divorced her because her family did not attend his father’s funeral.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Antoinette indicated that his ex-husband’s family advised him on divorce because her family did not help with the funeral rites of her father-in-law as expected.
As custom demands, her ex-husband’s family were expected to officially communicate the death of their father to her family, but failed to do so, and Antoinette’s family assumed they were not wanted at the funeral.
“My father is a chief, so these things are very important. If you don’t invite them, they can’t come. Even during the one-week observation, they didn’t tell my family about it, but I talked them into attending it.
So when it happened the second time, it meant they didn’t want us there. In tradition, it shows disrespect. My ex-husband told me that his family says he should divorce me because of that,” she said.
Miss Owusu added that his husband was not present at the funeral due to personal reasons. Antoinette acknowledged that their marriage was not perfect, but she believes he wanted a divorce and only used that as an excuse.
“For almost ten months, he denied me sex. Nothing happened before that. He vacated the bedroom because he didn’t want more kids. We only have a child together, but he has two with another woman,” Antoinette added.
