Middle-aged woman Dorcas Oduro has shared her experience working as a hairdresser in South Africa.
Speaking on Daily Hustle with DJ Nyaami, Dorcas indicated that she only made GHS14,000 after six years and three months and was paid GHS300 monthly. According to her, the ‘helper’ paid for her flight ticket and travel documents.
“I was supposed to be there for four years, but I stayed two years more. The agreement was that we would come for our money in Ghana after the contract ended, but she gave me money to buy what I needed while in SA.
Also, I was not allowed to leave the house or date. After six years, I decided to come back, and she gave me GHS24,000,” she said.
Dorcas mentioned that after a while in Ghana, she decided to go back to South Africa to work and engaged the services of an ‘agent.’ The agent demanded GHS2000 to process her document, but Dorcas paid GHS1000 to begin.
“The agent told me he was working in Dubai instead, and I agreed. I gave him GHS1000, and he told me I’d leave in two weeks. I added the rest, the flight date passed, and he was still giving excuses. I asked him for my money, and he sent only GHS200.
He didn’t answer my calls after that, and when he did, I told him I had all the evidence on my phone and that I’d report him. A few days later, someone came by my shop and stole my phone. I believe he was the one who sent him,” Dorcas added.
