UK-based Ghanaian gospel artist Edward Amponsah has disclosed that he once worked as a car wash attendant with a wage of 70 pounds after washing 80 cars.
Speaking on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Edward revealed that his salary motivated him to further his education in the UK. He mentioned that his family members who hosted him introduced him to some cleaning jobs, but he wanted more.
“I had a degree, so I didn’t want to do the cleaning job forever. An uncle helped me with the car wash job, but they gave me 70 pounds after 80 cars. It pushed me to do more because I couldn’t let my degree go waste.
My uncles had no university education, but I did. They had their skillset, so I had to push myself to go into education,” he told DJ Nyaami.
Moreover, Edward indicated that some of his friends came to further their studies and got better job opportunities.
“They came to do their masters here after the national service and got better jobs, but I was still doing the cleaning. It wasn’t easy because the fees were expensive.”
According to Edward, his friends motivated and guided him to get a better career in the UK. He advised the youth to find educated people who will guide their paths to avoid limiting themselves to menial jobs.
“At a time, my friends were all cleaners, and my biggest aspiration was to clean a bus. That was my dream. I was working at a supermarket then. You don’t need a degree to get a cashier job here, but I had no idea. I was overqualified when I found out,” he added.
On his music, Edward disclosed that it is not a business but purely a ministry because “I have a full-time job.” He began his music path in 2018 with five singles to his credit.
Edward Amponsah has been nominated in the Worship Song of the year category at the Ghana Music Awards UK 2022.
