UK-based Ghanaian Awurama Gyasi has stated that Ghanaians do not support start-ups owned by fellow Ghanaians, but they accept foreign start-ups.
In a chat on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Awurama mentioned that she does not inform people that she owns the business. According to her, many look down on her products when they find out she is behind them.
“I’ve encountered many people who discourage me because I am a Ghanaian. They think that the product must be of low quality if it is a Ghanaian who is behind it. Usually, I don’t tell people that I make the products. If I tell them that it’s a foreigner, they buy it more.”
Awurama mentioned that these are some of the challenges she faces among the Ghanaian community in the UK.
Besides her cosmetic start-up, Awurama is a health assistant who works in a care facility in Manchester. She shared some experiences working as a health assistant with DJ Nyaami.
JM Naturals is a skin product mainly for the black skin. Moreover, she makes hair products for hair growth for both genders.
Awurama Gyasi mentioned that she hopes to set up a shop in Ghana as well. As a Ghanaian, she believes bringing her start-up home will create a bigger market for the business.
