Germany based Ghanaian Francis Appiah has shared the story of his journey to Europe; he was arrested in Greece several times before getting to his destination.
Mr Appiah mentioned that a travel agent told him that he could access a train to Germany, Italy and other countries from Greece. However, that was not the case at the time.
Speaking on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mr Francis disclosed that he tried to cross the Turkish border to Greece in an inflatable boat and only made it out on his fourth attempt. According to him, their home countries determined how long they were jailed.
“If you tell them you’re Ghanaian, they may detain you for about two weeks or more because there was no war in Ghana. The immigration arrested over 100 people were arrested weekly because many people used that route to Europe,” he told DJ Nyaami.
Francis further stated that upon arrival in Greece, they registered as asylum seekers. He mentioned that Nigerians were jailed for up to two years, but Ghanaians were released in hours.
“Their reputation precedes them. Immigration did not want to see Nigerians because of their reputation. As a Ghanaian, I was released in a few hours.”
Moreover, Mr Appiah advised the youth to research travel destinations before moving. He added that he was stranded in Greece for a while. However, he was part of the few that travelled out of Greece in months. Others were stuck in Greece for years with no job.
