Australia-based Ghanaian Ben Mensah has disclosed that West Africans, especially Nigerians have a bad reputation in Australia because many overstay their visa.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Ben indicated that after the fake journalists’ visa scandal in 2018, Australian immigration has tightened up the visa issuance for West Africans.
According to Ben, even with his Australian residence permit, the immigration thoroughly checks his documents whenever he travels.
“You can’t come to Australia to work. They won’t even give you a visa. They often issue work visas to the Europeans and Japanese, but when they see our West African passports, they deny them. Immigration issues the Americans year visa and extends them.
Our people do not help the situation, especially after the 60 ‘fake journalists’ story. Even after I got my papers, they still scrutinized me before entering. Our Nigerian brothers do not help either,” he said.
Speaking on job availability and minimum wage in Australia, Ben disclosed that many are available for skilled and unskilled personnel. Moreover, “you can make good money even as a cleaner,”
