Fashion model and tourism enthusiast Maame Abena Akwetey has indicated that most Ghanaians do not appreciate tourism. She also urged the government to adopt a maintenance culture to help boost tourism in Ghana.
In an interview on SVTV Africa, Abena stated that as a member of Travel With A Purpose (TWAP), they organize trips to different regions in Ghana and broadcast moments to their followers across the world.
According to her, most Ghanaians either don’t have the money to tour Ghana or do not see the benefits of tourism. Abena added that most tourist sites are not well maintained to attract tourists.
“Ghanaians don’t tour. It is something we need to talk about so they know that it is something they need. Some think they are okay and don’t need to tour, but others can’t afford it. It is stressful these days, so you need to have fun sometimes to feel refreshed,” she told host DJ Nyaami.
Abena also encouraged Ghanaians to adopt a touring lifestyle. She listed some benefits that they are sure to get on such trips.
“I want to encourage Ghanaians to patronize tourism, and also I want to reach out to the leaders. The maintenance is poor in many of the tourist sites, and they need to keep them well to attract foreign tourists as well,” she added.
TWAP organizes several trips to tourist spots annually. It is open to everyone who loves fun trips to local sites in the homeland.
